Latin American Faces:  Hearing a New Call, Receiving Their Gifts

9:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.

January 9

Hearing a New Call
What messages do we find in scripture about living with foreigners and immigrants? How can we re-imagine our church in light of a globalized millennium generation? Is our challenge as Reformed Christians merely to be welcoming, or do we have a responsibility to change the world?

Reginaldo P. Braga, Jr.  Assistant Professor for Christian Education, Interdenominational Theological Center, Leader

January 16

Understanding Immigration Law and Policy
Immigration is mainly a problem for people who came from Latin America, or isn’t it? If you marry an American, you immediately become a U.S. citizen, or don’t you? Better enforcement will reduce immigration-related problems, or won’t it? Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070 does not affect my ministry at Central, or does it?

Francis J. Mulcah,y  Executive Director, Georgia Catholic Conference; Sue Colussy, former Director of Immigration Services at Catholic Social Services, Leaders

January 23

Crossing Borders in a Time of Fear
What is harder: translating between English and Spanish, or between faith and action? When do you follow the Book of Order, when do you change it, and when do you just go walk in the Sonora desert? If foreigners and immigrants don’t congregate with us, who misses out, they or we?

Rick Ufford-Chase Executive Director, Presbyterian Peace Fellowship and Co-Director, Stony Point Conference Center, Leader

January 30

Receiving Their Gifts

What is it like to be Presbyterian, Latino, and American? What type of ministry can we find within our denomination, not far from Atlanta, for multi-cultural, bilingual congregations? You mean to tell me that you can worship, encourage spiritual growth, embrace diversity, and affirm Reformed faith in English and Spanish?

José E. Torres, Parish Associate at Friendship Presbyterian Church, Leader; he will be introduced by Rev. Sara Hayden
