shelter_volunteerOverview

Central Night Shelter welcomes the support of all people interested in participating in a ministry of compassion for the homeless.

There are several roles for volunteers in running the shelter on a daily basis:

  • Street Crew
  • Trainer
  • Meal Volunteers
  • Sack Lunch Providers
  • Overnight Volunteers

A description of each role and its duties can be downloaded here. To sign up for a shift, please contact the appropriate volunteer coordinator.

Shelter Foot Clinic

Every Wednesday night during the Night Shelter season, a group of volunteers offers foot care.  Many night shelter guests spend long hours each day outdoors on their feet in ill-fitting, poorly conditioned shoes, often in cold, rainy weather.  We provide a small comfort for tired, sore feet.  The foot clinic is staffed by volunteer lay-people  who offer a warm water soak for our guests' feet; a pedicure, including clipping nails, reducing calluses, scraping dry skin; a foot massage; minor medical care for cuts, funguses, and infections; and friendly, non-judgmental conversation.  The volunteers are able to see about 30 men at the Central location and 15 men at the Shrine location each week.

Volunteers are invited to join u s for the fall and winter shelter season starting in November.  No experience is necessary!  Water preparers as well as foot washers are needed.  Email Ike Lee or contact him by phone 404-297-2097.

Shelter Medical Clinic

Each Wednesday night a shelter "sick call" medical clinic is staffed by volunteer medical professionals who provide assistance to teh shelter guests with mild colds and minor injuries.  The volunteers check blood pressure, perform modes examinations, and answer the questions and concerns of our shelter guests.  The clinic sees about 20 men each night.  Doctors, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners are needed to staff the clinic.  Please email Martha Crenshaw or contact her by phone 404-297-2097.

Open Nights

Because the shelter depends entirely on volunteers for its staff and administration, we frequently have openings arise at the last minute. Experienced volunteers, please consider whether you may be able to serve on one of the evenings listed below:
